Three Co Kerry Poets to read at World Fiddle Day Scartaglin
“A Crow’s Jagged Flight: Spoken Music”, featuring poets Eileen Sheehan , John W. Sexton and Breda Joy, will be part of the events at the Heritage Centre on Saturday May the 20th for World Fiddle Day.

This will be the first time that poetry has been featured as part of the festival programme, and during this event the three poets will explore the influence that Sliabh Luachra has exerted on their writing through its landscape, people and folklore.

Crows are known to travel in a straight line, but people, and most especially poets, seldom do. The title refers to the separate journeys that each of the poets have made in their lives and how this relates not only to the nature of their poetry, but to their personal relationship with Sliabh Luachra.

Eileen Sheehan was born and raised in Scartaglen and is now living in Killarney. Her forthcoming third collection of poetry, “The Narrow Way of Souls”, draws heavily on the folklore and humour of her native village.

Poet and children’s novelist John W. Sexton has close ties to Brosna, as his mother, Kathleen, was born in Ahane. He is a nephew of fiddle players Patie Curtin and his brother, the late and legendary Con Curtin. Although reared in London, John spent many of his childhood summers in Ahane, and the area and family often feature in his poetry and writing.

Breda Joy was born and still lives in Killarney and is well known as a journalist, poet and short story writer. Her writings feature interviews with well-known characters from Scartaglen, such as Cornie Tangney, blacksmith Paddy Casey, and tailor and musician John P. Brosnan.

With three dynamic readers this promises to be an engaging and enjoyable event.
